What is a Greenhouse effect?

Greenhouse gases - carbon dioxide, methane, nitric oxide, ozone and more - accumulate in the atmosphere surrounding the Earth, trapping the Sun's heat. Heat waves released back from the Earth's floor encounter greenhouse gases trapped in the troposphere layer of the atmosphere. These gases redirect the heat waves back to the base of the Earth. The greenhouse gas effect makes the Earth's surface hotter and hotter, causing a climate crisis. The more greenhouse gases are emitted, the faster the Earth warms.
