What is a Carbon Equivalent?
Carbon equivalent is the expression of a greenhouse gas emission as equivalent to the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2). The carbon equivalent is used to take into account the different warming effects of greenhouse gases. For example, the greenhouse gas effect of methane (CH4) is about 25 times greater than that of carbon dioxide. Therefore, one ton of methane emissions is expressed as the equivalent of 25 tons of carbon dioxide. The carbon equivalent is used to compare greenhouse gas emissions and assess the impacts of climate change.
